CD*NY Gift Certificates |
This season, or any season, use a CD*NY gift certificate to invite a friend to join you for a cost-free evening of dancing at The Church of the Village on 13th Street off 7th Avenue. Ask the door person to point out the coordinator, and talk to the coordinator at the break about how to buy a gift certificate. Or, you may email Paul Ross at childgrove@hotmail.com and request a gift certificate by mail. Please put "CD*NY gift certificate" in the subject line of your message. Each certificate costs $13 dollars for any regular evening of dancing on English Tuesdays or Contra Saturdays. |
Where and when can I use this certificate? At either of the dance series sponsored by Country Dance * New York – Tuesday evening English dances, which run from 7 to 10:15 p.m.; or Saturday evening American contra dances, which run from 8 to 10:45 p.m. with a beginners' session from 7:30 to 8. Both kinds of dances are held in the basement of The Church of the Village, 201 West 13th Street at Seventh Avenue (northwest corner – enter on 13th street). Do I have to use it before a certain date or it will expire? No, it will never expire, though you are encouraged to use it reasonably promptly. Can I use it for either an English dance on a Tuesday or a contra dance on a Saturday? Yes – it is good for one dance of either sort. What is the dancing like at these two kinds of events? You can learn something about it from YouTube.com – put in "contra dancing" and "English country dancing" as search terms and you will get a variety of things. To see what English dancing in New York is like, put in "Yuletide cotillion" and you will see an event from a previous year. Don't be put off by some of the fancy-seeming steps or movements you see – the videos don't show the teaching that is done for each dance, or how quickly people pick up the basics. New dancers are welcome, and more experienced dancers usually make an effort to help them learn what to do and to fit in. And notice the great live music that you'll hear at all CD*NY events! If I'm a first-time dancer when I use the gift certificate, will I also receive a "First-timer pass" to let me come to a second dance for free? Yes. Can I use the certificate for special events, like the Fall Fling or Playford Ball? You can use the certificate to pay for part of those events, if you like. Because those events are more expensive, you would need to pay additional money to equal the usual cost of the event minus the value of the certificate ($13). Can I buy them for myself to save money at contra dances? That would not be in the spirit of the gift certificate program, which is designed to make it easier for new dancers to come dancing. If you are a regular dancer, you would save more money by buying a membership in CD*NY for yourself. Instead of saving a dollar with the gift certificate, you would save $4 a night after you had attended 8 dances (individual membership costs $30, so saving $4 a night you would have saved $32 after 8 dances and the membership would have paid for itself). There are roughly 18 dances of each kind in the fall and another 18 in the spring, so there is lots of opportunity for saving. Can I buy a gift certificate at a dance? Yes, at most dances. The coordinator of the evening is responsible for selling them and will usually be available at the break to do that. Can I buy one by mail? Yes. email Paul Ross at childgrove@hotmail.com for details on how to proceed. Put "CDNY Gift Certificate" in the subject line of your message. Can I buy a gift certificate online? No, not at this time. |
