Carl Levine

Carl Levine, an English Country Dance and contra dance teacher/caller, had his first brush with traditional dance in the 1970s as an undergraduate at Swarthmore College. Carl began dancing in earnest in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the 1980s. He has at various times been an active participant in English country, contra, Scottish, international, Scandinavian, swing and longsword dancing. Carl began teaching dance in 1990. He apprenticed with Erna Lynne Bogue in Ann Arbor in the 1990s and has also studied dance calling/teaching with Bob Dalsamer, Larry Edelman, John Krum and Bruce Hamilton. In the 1990s while at Yale Law School Carl "had the privilege to be part of a group of English Country Dancers in the New Haven area who worked with Christine Helwig and Marshall Barron" on their book of newly reconstructed English dances written to the music of Purcell, by dancing out and commenting on their proposed reconstructions prior to publication. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1997 Carl moved back to New York, where he grew up, in 1997, where he began dancing with CD*NY. Carl graduated from CD*NY's English Country Dance apprenticeship program in 2001.

Carl has performed English Country Dance with the Ann Arbor English Country Dancers at town festivals, for graduate classes in English literature and elsewhere in the grater Ann Arbor area. He has also performed Longsword Dance with the Greenwich Morris Men at NOMAD, NEFFA and the New York Christmas Revels. Carl is former President of the Ann Arbor Council for Traditional Music and Dance, and co-founder of the Ann Arbor Singing Circle.

Besides calling in New York City, Carl has called dances in Ann Arbor, New Haven, Troy, Wayne, at the LITMA dance in Smithtown, at NOMAD and at various CDSS dance camps. Carl has also led workshops in hambo, beginning swing and beginning waltz. Carl, a former elementary special education teacher with an M.A. in special education, and the father of Chloe Levine, a favorite in the local dance community (see photo above), is comfortable teaching dances for all age levels.
